Assertion Analysis #11

Pastor Martin Niemoller excerpts describe many different emotions and feelings. He portrays the indifference he had towards other ethnic groups when they faced oppression in Germany. Then when it came time for himself to be added to the list, there was no one left to speak up for him.  Once everyone was claimed, he should've spoken up for those that weren't even him. What he stood to believe is when he should've had a say.

Pastor Niemoller uses many rhetorical devices. One of them is anaphora. When he explains the phrase, "Then they came for..."; as he lists off all the groups that were effected. These were people like the communists, the Catholics, and more. Then, the list finally ends with him. He made it seem regretful and ashamed of what hes done. His indifference is made clear in his anaphora of the phrase, "I wasn't...", followed up by the oppressed group.

Assertion Analysis #10

Since Cotton Mather was a Puritan Minister, he was always against the devil. In the excerpt, he says "Ye monsters are bubbling deep", "monsters" being the devil or any devious beings. The connections with the devil are made by him seeing the words deep and monsters. Historically, puritans believe the devil is basically us. "Bubbling" and "Wag your tails about" may show that they are always present. Anyone and everyone is in harms way.

He uses personification and irony in his little excerpt. Personification is used when he tells the devil-like beings to "wag your tails". These are based a purely spiritual beliefs. Cotton Mather uses irony through the whole excerpt. He is taunting the beings in a friendly manner when he says "wag your tails". He uses a calmer and friendlier tone to taunt them to take action, but obviously he is completely against them.

Assertion Analysis #9

Martin Luther King felt that no upcoming leaders would care about the rights for African American so he decided to step up himself and establish himself as a political leader. African American culture has been changed while white people think of it as changing blacks into their culture, and they think of it as destroying their culture and pride. The negroes efforts to change and fight for their pride is plummeting towards the ground. America has not paid attention towards blacks and their problems, such as economics. As a result, negroes were willing to cause uproars and riots.

Martin Luther King uses lots of rhetoric devices in his speech, one of them was
aepetition. He uses the term "Negros" in his speech to promote the idea that negros are the ones being targeted. If you were the reader or audience seeing a term using repeatedly you would know that it is a serious deal in that situation. By using repetition in the speech, Martin Luther King was able that emphasize the meaning of the speech.
